COP28: the Role of Sea Ice Biogeochemistry and Ice-associated Ecosystems in the Earth System
8 December 2023

CRiceS researchers Letizia Tedesco, Lisa Miler and Nadja Steiner participated in the COP28 in Dubai. They took part in a session organized by BEPSII to support the International Cryosphere Climate Initiative Cryosphere Pavilion.

The speakers described the impacts of ocean warming, sea ice decline, and shifting seasonality on sea ice biogeochemistry and associated ecosystems in polar oceans.

The speakers unanimously highlighted that, as Nadja Steiner concluded, “The key mitigation measure that can slow the transition to a strictly seasonal ice cover, reduce the loss of sea-ice habitats and preserve the unique sea-ice ecosystem services to humans is a reduction in carbon emissions”.
