14 November, Cryosphere Pavilion, Jacqueline Stefels delivered a talk the relevance of sea-ice ecosystem and biogeochemistry for the functioning of the Southern Ocean food web.
15 November 2024, Cryosphere Pavilion, BEPSII organized a session titled "Vanishing Sea Ice: What It Means for Our Oceans and Ecosystems" moderated by Letizia Tedesco. The panel included Jacqueline Stefels, Stefanie Arndt, Josephine Rapp, Sian Henley and Marcello Vichi.
This expert panel discussed ongoing and future changes in Arctic and Antarctic sea ice, their effects on polar ocean ecosystems, and our current understanding and preparedness for these changes. As sea ice remains a unique, fundamental, and fragile habitat, precautionary principles, thorough scientific studies, and strong regulatory frameworks are crucial when considering any human interventions. The session concluded with policy recommendations and identified areas where further research is urgently needed.
